Hampton Rallies in Second Half to Down Hofstra

Hempstead, NY - After leading by one at halftime over Hampton, the Hofstra women's basketball team suffered a 74-55 defeat in Colonial Athletic Association action from the David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex.
 
The loss drops Hofstra to 8-12 overall and 2-7 in conference play, and Hampton moves to 7-12 overall and 4-5 in the CAA.
 
Brandy Thomas finished with a game-high 20 points and 10 rebounds, and Sorelle Ineza scored 10 with six rebounds and three steals. Alarice Gooden totaled eight points, and Ally Knights posted five assists for the Pride.
 
Hofstra jumped out to a 12-10 lead in the first quarter. The Lady Pirates scored the first four points of the afternoon, but back-to-back three-pointers by Emma Von Essen and Rosi Nicholson put the Pride in front by two at the 6:42 mark. Hampton responded with a pair of jumpers by Jermany Mapp to pull back in front before rattled off six straight points off layups by Thomas and Ineza and an Alarice Gooden jumper, putting Hofstra in front 12-8 with 1:37 left in the quarter. Hampton cut Hofstra's lead to two with a bucket at 1:08.
 
After Hampton scored four of the first six points in the second quarter, the Pride jumped out to a five-point lead behind five straight points from Thomas. Following a Madison Buford jumper at 6:25, the Pride reeled off an 8-3 run, with six points coming from Thomas, to lead by eight with 4:11 remaining in the quarter. Hampton clawed back with a 10-3 run of their own, closing to within two of the Pride with 22 seconds on the clock. With an Ineza free throw and a Mapp layup, the score was 32-31 going into halftime.
 
Hampton took control of the game with a 27-10 third quarter. The Lady Pirates exploded for a 12-0 run lasting until Zyheima Swint converted a pair of free throws at the 5:50 mark. Hampton's hot scoring continued with an 11-3 to balloon its lead over Hofstra to 18 with 2:18 to play in the quarter. Ineza ended Hampton's run with a layup and free throw at 1:58, but Hampton scored four of the final seven points to lead, 58-42, going into the fourth quarter. Hampton led by as many as 20 points in the fourth quarter, and the Pride were unable to close the gap before the final buzzer sounded.
 
Mapp finished with 18 points to lead the Lady Pirates in scoring, and Nylah Young totaled 16 points and a team-best seven rebounds.
 
Hofstra is back in action on February 3 with a road game against Monmouth (10-11, 5-5 CAA) at 7 p.m.
 
NOTES:
-Hofstra outshot Hampton from three-point range, 23.1-percent to 16.7-percent, but only shot 34.7-percent for the game to Hampton's 52.6-percent.
-This was the first meeting between Hofstra and Hampton in women's basketball.
