Hofstra Suffers Home Defeat to Northeastern

Hempstead, NY – The Hofstra women's basketball team drops to 8-10 overall and 2-5 against Colonial Athletic Association opponents following a 68-48 home loss to Northeastern on Sunday.

Emma Von Essen paced the Pride with 13 points on 5-14 shooting and three three-pointers. Sorelle Ineza and Ally Knights finished with nine points each for the home side, and Zyheima Swint pulled down a team-high six rebounds.

Hofstra jumped out to a quick three-point lead over the Huskies (9-8, 4-2 CAA) off a Brandy Thomas trey 26 seconds into the first quarter. Northeastern pulled ahead with five straight points, but a Von Essen jumper evened the score at 5-5 at 7:26. Northeastern scored five of the next seven points to lead by three with 3:50 remaining before Swint made it a one-score game with a tough layup. After the Huskies led once again by three, Hofstra closed out the first quarter with a pair of two-pointers by Ineza and Von Essen to lead, 13-12.

Northeastern outscored Hofstra, 21-11, in the second quarter to pull ahead, 33-24, going into halftime. Von Essen's three put Hofstra ahead by four inside the first minute of the quarter, but Northeastern rallied and scored the next 11 points to jump out to a 23-16 lead with 5:14 to go before a trey by Von Essen ended Northeastern's run. An Ineza three-pointer cut Northeastern's lead to three with 3:43 remaining before the break, but the visitors scored eight of the final 10 points of the quarter to go into halftime with a nine-point lead over the Pride.

A 21-10 third quarter put Northeastern comfortably in front of the Pride. Swint converted a contested layup to make it a seven-point deficit 20 seconds into the start of the second half, but Northeastern went on an 11-3 run to pull ahead of Hofstra by 14 points before Von Essen hit her third three-pointer of the contest at 5:50. The Huskies ended the frame on an 11-2 run lasting the final 4:29 of the quarter to put the hosts ahead by 20 going into the fourth quarter. Despite the fourth quarter being an even 14-14 score, Hofstra never threatened Northeastern in the final frame.
