Hofstra Runs Away From UNCW In Second Half In 24-Point Win

Hempstead, NY - Hofstra outscored UNCW, 40-16, in the second half and posted a 70-46 victory over the Seahawks in a Colonial Athletic Association game Thursday night at the David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex. The teams were tied at 30 entering the second half.

The Pride moved to 13-8 on the season and 6-2 in the CAA with the win. The win was Hofstra's fifth in its last six games. UNCW slipped to 15-6 overall and 5-3 in league action.

Tyler Thomas led the Pride with a season-high 28 points on 11-18 shooting. The senior guard also had a season-best seven rebounds. Aaron Estrada scored 17 points and added seven rebounds, four assists, and four steals. Jaquan Carlos paced the Pride with five assists.  

The teams played a close first half in which the Pride never trailed. The Pride scored the first basket followed by two free throws from UNCW for a 2-2 tie. Thomas scored the next five points for Hofstra on a three-pointer and a turnaround jumper. The lead would grow to nine, 13-4, with 12:44 to go on a driving layup from Thomas. The Seahawks would score six unanswered points to pull within three, 13-10, 3:30 later. Hofstra would hold a 26-20 lead with just over three minutes on the clock after a layup from Estrada. However, UNCW would close the half on a 10-4 spurt, tying the game at 30 with 26 seconds to play on a layup from Victor Enoh. 

The second half was all Hofstra as the Pride outscored the Seahawks, 17-6 over the first 7:13 to open up a 47-36 lead following a three-pointer from Carlos. Estrada had eight consecutive points in the Hofstra run. The lead grew to 19, 59-40, with 6:36 remaining after a three-point play from Thomas. Leading 63-44 with 4:03 to go, Estrada nailed a three-pointer and Thomas followed with a pullup jumper to extend the advantage to 24, 68-44, with 2:52 to play. A pair of free throws from Thomas made it a 26-point lead, 70-44, with 1:47 to play before Khamari Mcgriff scored a layup for the Seahawks with 1:35 remaining to close out the scoring. 

Maleeck Harden-Hayes was the lone Seahawk in double-figures with 13 points. Enoh led UNCW with six rebounds. 

Hofstra will be back in action Thursday, January 26, at Elon. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.

Notes:
-Hofstra is 26-23 all-time versus UNCW and has won six of the last seven meetings. 
-The victory was Hofstra's 100th since the start of the 2018-19 season, the most of any CAA school.
-The 46 points were the fewest points allowed by the Pride this season. 
-The Pride shot 53-percent from the floor. 
-Hofstra is 6-1 at home in 2022-23.
-The Pride is 5-0 on Thursdays this season and 25-6 in its last 31 Thursday games dating back to Feb. 1, 2018.
