Hempstead, NY – In the first Colonial Athletic Association game of the 2022 season for both sides, the Hofstra field hockey team fell in a thrilling 2-1 double overtime decision to visiting Northeastern.
Hofstra slips to 4-6 overall and 0-1 in conference play with today's defeat, while the Huskies move to 2-7 overall and 1-0 in the CAA.
Trailing 1-0 after three quarters, the Pride leveled the score two minutes into the fourth quarter off the stick of
Samantha Spera. On the Pride's third penalty corner of the afternoon,
Tara McNally had her shot blocked by Northeastern goalkeeper Jonna Kennedy, but Kennedy and the Northeastern defense failed to clear the ball away. Spera pounced on the loose ball and slotted home her third of the year to tie the game with 13:07 still to play.
In the first penalty corner of the second overtime period, Maria Armaganian received the insertion from Sarah Coyle and set up Mak Graves, and Graves sent her shot past a diving
Merlijn van der Vegt and into the far corner of the goal for the winner 51 seconds into play.
The Huskies opened the scoring early in the second quarter following a scoreless first. Coyle caused a Hofstra turnover inside Hofstra's half of the pitch, and Lara Taylor connected with Kate Blaisdell on a long pass into the Hofstra arc. van der Vegt made an unbelievable stick save on a high shot, but the rebound was put away by Emmy Stubbs at the 13:32 mark of the quarter.
Merlijn van der Vegt made five saves in today's contest.
Cami Valor led the Pride with three total shots and two shots on goal.
Kennedy made three saves for the Huskies, while Taylor led the team with three total shots, and Blaisdell and Graves had two shots on target each.
The Pride shifts back to non-conference play on Sunday (Oct. 2) at 1 p.m. in a home contest against Bryant.

-The all-time series record is now 20-7 in favor of Northeastern.

Merlijn van der Vegt now has 263 saves for their career, putting them 20 shy of surpassing Kaitlyn De Turo (283, 2009-13) for the 10th-most saves in a career at Hofstra.
