Hofstra Used Strong Defensive Effort To Blank Princeton

Hempstead, NY - Skylar Kuzmich made five saves, including on a second half penalty kick, to make Ellen Halseth's third-minute goal stand up in a 1-0 Hofstra victory over Princeton Thursday night at Hofstra Soccer Stadium.

Hofstra moved to 5-2-1 on the season with the victory, while Princeton slipped to 4-3-0 with the loss. The Tigers entered the game ranked seventh in the United Soccer Coaches East Region Poll.

Kuzmich made three saves in the first half and came up with two big ones in the second half. The senior keeper's biggest save came with just under 39 minutes on the clock as she stopped Pietra Tordin's penalty kick with a dive to her left. Hofstra defender Anja Suttner, a two-time Colonial Athletic Association Defensive Player of the Year, also came up big in the latter stages of the game as her slide tackle with just under five minutes to go stopped a 1v1 opportunity and her bicycle kick clearance prevented the tying goal just about a minute later.

The Pride took advantage of an early Princeton miscue to notch the only goal of the evening. A Princeton defender played the ball back to goalkeeper Tyler McCamey (5 saves) in the third minute and a charging Halseth was able to deflect McCamey's clearing attempt into the net for her third goal of the season.

Hofstra will wrap up its non-conference schedule Sunday at 1 p.m. when it hosts Columbia.
