Hempstead, NY -
Jake Liberatore's three-run home run in the bottom of the ninth inning gave Hofstra a come-from-behind 6-5 victory over James Madison Saturday afternoon in a Colonial Athletic Association game at University Field. The walk-off home run was Liberatore's second in 11 days.
Hofstra stretched its winning streak to four games and improved to 25-21 overall and 14-9 in CAA play. The victory clinched a winning season for the Pride, their first since 2012. James Madison slipped to 26-22 overall and 11-8 in CAA play.
Hofstra held a 2-0 lead following RBI singles from
Brian Morrell in the first and
Michael Florides in the second. The Dukes struck for four runs in the fifth with Kyle Novak knocking in two with a double to right and Fenwick Trimble driving in two more with his sixth home run of the season.
Liberatore made it a 4-3 game in the seventh with an RBI single before Coleman Calabrese put James Madison back up by a pair in the eighth with a fielder's choice on a safety squeeze play.
With James Madison closer Lliam Grubbs in the game in the ninth,
Kevin Bruggeman drew a walk on a seven-pitch at-bat and
Steve Harrington followed with a double to right field that put runners on second and third. That brought up Liberatore, who had hit a home run in the ninth against Iona to win that game on May 3. The graduate transfer, who was celebrated on Senior Day prior to the game, drove a 0-1 pitch over the wall in left center to give Hofstra its sixth win in its final at-bat this season.
Aljo Sujak, another senior, picked up the win in relief to improve to 2-1 on the year. Sujak did not allow a hit or a run 1 2/3 innings with three strikeouts. Liberatore finished the game 3-4 with four RBIs, while Harrington had a 3-4 day for the Pride with two doubles.
Grubbs (1-3) took the loss after allowing three runs on two hits without recording an out. Â
The teams conclude the series Sunday at 1 p.m. with the game also being Hofstra's regular season finale.
