Williamsburg, VA - Sophomore Kerry Walser scored a career-high five goals and senior Jackie Gatti tallied six points on two goals and four assists to lead the Hofstra women's lacrosse team to an 18-11 road win over William & Mary on Saturday afternoon at Martin Family Stadium.
Trailing 6-2 after one quarter, Hofstra used a 10-3 run to take a 12-9 lead midway through the third quarter before going on to the seven-goal victory. The Pride outscored the Tribe, 16-5, over the final three quarters.
Hofstra improved to 8-7 overall and 2-3 in league play, while William & Mary slipped to 4-11 and 0-5 in Colonial Athletic Association action.
Hofstra erased a 2-0 deficit with goals from
Grace Langella and Walser midway through the first quarter to knot the game at two with 7:16 showing on the clock. The Tribe immediately responded, though, and scored four straight goals to earn a 6-2 lead with seconds left in the first quarter.
Gatti would kick-start the first half rally for the Pride as she scored an unassisted goal just over a minute into the second stanza. Down 7-3 in the opening minutes of the second quarter, Hofstra would get a trio of goals including a goal and an assist from Gatti, to even the score at seven on Walser's second of the contest. William & Mary went back in front via a goal from Sarah Cipolla, but Hofstra answered and Langella scored with 36 seconds left before the intermission to even the score at eight at the break.
William & Mary scored the first goal of the third quarter before Walser ignited a 4-0 scoring run that pushed the lead to 12-9 on a goal from
Kate Fiola with 7:20 left in the period. The Pride would take a two-goal lead into the final quarter and took over to start the quarter as
Katie Whelan,
Lauren Coletti, and Walser scored in a five-minute span to give Hofstra a commanding 16-11 lead with just over 10 minutes left.
In addition to Walser and Gatti, Colletti had a career-best four goals. Fiola added three goals and an assist, while Langella had a pair of goals. Freshman Kyndall Jackson had her first career goal. Goalkeeper Jess Smith made 10 saves and added four ground balls. Anna Kaufmann had four ground balls and added two caused turnovers. Shannon Boyle led the Pride with five draw controls, while Whelan had four.  Â
Serena Jacobs led William & Mary with four goals. Lauren Russell and Sarah Cipolla each had two goals and an assist. Elise Palmer made 10 saves in goal for the Tribe.
Hofstra will conclude the regular season a week from today when it hosts Elon at 12 p.m. Admission is free to the contest and prior to the game the program will honor its 11 seniors. The game will also air on FloLive.
NOTES:
- Hofstra's 18 goals are a season-high and the most since also scoring 18 against Bucknell on Feb. 15, 2020.Â
- Hofstra is 14-6 all-time against William & Mary. The Pride has won seven consecutive games against the Tribe. This marked the first meeting between the teams since a 14-11 Hofstra win in 2019.
- Whelan has now scored a point in 24 consecutive games.
- Boyle had two ground balls in the game and needs one to move into 10th all-time at Hofstra.
