Hempstead, NY - Hofstra dropped a three-set match at No. 6 singles for the deciding point in a 4-3 loss to NJIT Friday at the Hofstra Tennis Courts. The Pride slipped to 5-8 overall with the loss.
The Pride started strong winning both completed doubles flights to earn the point and a 1-0 lead.
Bo Cautaerts and
Ostap Kovalenko defeated Amine El Khoti and Samuel Townes, 6-4, at No. 1 while
Matthew Garcia and
Vincent Turina picked up a 6-0 win over Abdullah Fouad and Daniel Sabolgal at No. 3.
Hofstra would get singles wins from Cautaerts at No. 1 over El Khoti (6-4, 2-6, 6-3) and
Matthew Garcia at No. 3 over Josh Smith (6-4, 3-6, 7-5). The Highlanders (9-8) won at Flights two, four, and five to set the stage for the clincher to happen at No. 6. Ammar Ferky of NJIT won the first set over the Pride's
Julien Wolfe, 6-4, before the Hofstra senior stormed back with a 6-3 win in the second. Ferky persevered and won the deciding third set, 6-4, to give NJIT the overall win.
Hofstra is back in action Saturday at Drexel in the regular season finale at 1 p.m.
