BB: Hofstra Rallies Past Delaware In Series Opener

Hempstead, NY – Hofstra overcame a 4-3 deficit in the fifth inning, scoring three times in its turn at bat and went on to post a 10-7 victory over Delaware Friday afternoon in the opening game of a three-game Colonial Athletic Association series at University Field.

Hofstra evened its record at 14-14 and moved to 6-4 in the CAA with the win. Delaware slipped to 19-12 overall and 4-3 in league play.

The Pride led 3-1 after three innings before the Blue Hens scored once in the fourth on a Jake Dunion home run and twice in the fifth on Nick Vera's home run. However, the Pride did not stay on the short end of the score for long, scoring three runs in the bottom of the fifth to take a 6-4 lead. A single by Steve Harrington followed by a hit batsman and a walk loaded the bases with two outs for Zack Bailey, who laced a two-run single to center to put the Pride back on top. Ryan Morash would make it a 6-4 game one batter later with a single up the middle.

Hofstra added some much-needed insurance runs in the sixth. Sean Flaherty led off with a triple and after a strikeout; Delaware intentionally walked Harrington to set up a double play chance with Bruggeman coming to bat. The junior catcher kept the ball off the ground as he took the first offering over the fence in right field for a three-run blast that made it a 9-4 contest.

Delaware made things interesting with three runs in the seventh to cut the Hofstra lead to two, but Flaherty doubled in the bottom of the inning and would come in on a wild pitch two batters later to put Hofstra back up by three, 10-7.

That was not the end of the drama though as the Blue Hens brought the tying run to the plate in the top of the ninth. Aljo Sujak came out of the pen and got a fly out to right to end the game and earn his first save of the season.

Mark Faello (4-2) allowed six runs (four earned) on five hits and four walks over six-plus innings of work. Michael O'Hanlon went the next 2 2/3 innings and allowed a run on three hits before yielding to Sujak.

Flaherty, Harrington, Santino Rosso, Bailey and Morash each finished with two hits on the day. Bruggeman drove in three runs, while Bailey and Morash each had a pair of RBIs.

Bryce Greenly was the only Delaware player to have a multi-hit game as he finished with two. Vera and Dunion each drove in two runs. Chris Ludman (4-3) took the loss for Delaware after allowing six runs (four earned) on 10 hits over five innings. Mike Biasiello allowed four runs on four hits over the final three innings.

The teams will meet again Saturday in game two with first pitch now scheduled for 12 p.m., a change from the original 1 p.m. start due to a threat of afternoon rain.

Notes:
-Bruggeman's home run was his third of the season.
-Flaherty's triple was the first of his career.
-Every Hofstra starter had at least one hit
-Anthony D'Onofrio extended his on-base streak to 17 games.
