WLAX: Boyle And Whelan Power Pride To Fourth Straight Win

Hempstead, NY - Graduate students Shannon Boyle and Katie Whelan had huge games as Boyle posted six draw controls, five ground balls, and two caused turnovers, while Whelan had five points (3G, 2A) and five draw controls to lead the Hofstra women's lacrosse team to a dominating 13-6 win over Wagner on Tuesday afternoon at James M. Shuart Stadium.

The win was Hofstra's fourth consecutive and improves the Pride's record to 5-1 this season. Wagner falls to 1-5 with the loss. The win streak is Hofstra's longest since a similar four-game streak from February 15-March 3, 2020.

Hofstra got off to a great start in the game as the Pride scored the first five goals of the contest, including all four goals in the game's first quarter. Whelan led the Pride on the game-opening run with a pair of goals with graduate student Arianna Esposito, junior Taylor Mennella, and senior Erin Demek also finding the back of the net.

After Wagner got on the board, the Pride would score twice more in the second quarter to take a 7-1 halftime advantage. Whelan completed her hat trick in the first 30 minutes of the game, while junior Kate Fiola scored her first of the game with 35 seconds left before the break.

Hofstra pushed the lead to six, 8-2, with the first tally of the third quarter off the stick of sophomore Kerry Walser. Wagner would then use a 4-1 scoring run to close the gap to 9-6 following a goal from Victoria Tucci with 42 seconds left in the third quarter.

It was all Hofstra's in the final quarter, though, as the Pride dominated the last 15 minutes and scored all four goals to pull away for the dominating win. Senior Grace Langella had a pair of goals in the quarter with Mennella and senior Jackie Gatti adding the others.

Mennella had four points on three goals and an assist in the game, while senior Jess Smith was once again outstanding in net with nine saves. She has now held each of the Pride's last four opponents to seven or fewer goals.

Kasey Dorney led Wagner with two goals, while Tucci had a goal and an assist. Angelina Skowronski tallied four draw controls, three ground balls, and three caused turnovers for the Seahawks.

Hofstra is back in action on Saturday when it travels to Marist for a 1 p.m. contest.
