BB: Hofstra Falls In 10 Innings At LIU

Brookville, NY - Hofstra rallied to tie the game in the top of the ninth inning but LIU loaded the bases in the bottom of the 10th and scored the winning run on a hit batsman to walk away with a 4-3 win over Hofstra Wednesday evening at the LIU Baseball Stadium.

Hofstra slipped to 10-9 with the loss, while the Sharks improved to 14-10 with the win.

The Sharks manufactured a run in the first inning as Giovanni Ciaccio led off with a single, went to second on a sacrifice bunt, stole third, and scored on a groundout. The Pride answered with a run in the third to tie things up as Matt Pelcher and Michael Florides started the inning off with back-to-back singles. The pair moved up a base on a passed ball before Anthony D'Onofrio delivered a sacrifice fly.

The score remained that way until the bottom of the fifth when LIU took a 2-1 lead on Ciaccio's two-out RBI triple that scored Connor Price, who had led off the inning with a single. The Sharks added an insurance run in the eighth, executing a double steal with runners on first and third with Seth Surrett scoring on the play.

Hofstra put together a rally in the ninth as Brian Morrell reached on an error to lead off the inning and Kevin Bruggeman singled with two outs to put runners on first and second. Ryan Morash's bloop single scored pinch runner Frankie DiMartino. Santino Rosso followed with a comebacker that LIU pitcher Josh Gainer got a glove on but could not field cleanly resulting in an infield single that scored Bruggeman with the tying run.

The Sharks loaded the bases in the 10th inning on a pair of walks and an infield single before reliever Lane Harris, Hofstra's second pitcher in the inning, hit Luke Turner with a 2-1 pitch to force in the winning run.

Steven Kaenzig (0-2) took the loss for Hofstra after allowing two runs on no hits and three walks in 3 1/3 innings of work.

Nick Torres (2-1) was the pitcher of record for the Sharks after pitching a scoreless 10th inning. Ciaccio had three hits for LIU while Turner had two hits.

Hofstra returns to action Friday at 3 p.m. when it hosts College of Charleston in the first game of a three-game Colonial Athletic Association series.
