Arlington, VA -
Brad Camarda and
Michael O'Hanlon combined on a shutout in game one and
Santino Rosso broke a 1-1 tie in the 14th inning of game two as Hofstra swept a doubleheader from George Washington Sunday at Tucker Field at Barcroft Park. The Pride won game one, 2-0, and took the second game, 2-1, in 14 innings.
Hofstra pitching was the story of the day as Hofstra allowed one unearned run on 11 hits in 23 innings of work with 23 strikeouts. The Pride moved to 6-5 on the season with the sweep, while the Colonials slipped to 5-10.
Camarda (2-0) turned in his second consecutive strong start, going seven innings and allowing five hits with seven strikeouts. O'Hanlon came on to pitch the final two innings, allowing one hit with one strikeout for his first save.
The Pride scored both of their runs in the fourth inning on a wild pitch.
Brian Morrell was on third and
Sean Flaherty on second when Connor Harris uncorked a wild pitch. Morrell came in to score and the throw from the catcher to Harris covering got past him and Flaherty, who read the play well and had rounded third kept coming and got in under the tag for the second run.
In the nightcap, the Colonials took a 1-0 lead in the first as Logan Leax drew a leadoff walk, advanced to second on a passed ball, and scored on Eddie Micheletti's single. Hofstra would tie the game in the fifth inning as
Ryan Morash led off with a single, stole second, moved to third on a ground out, and scored on Morrell's single to right field.
The score remained that way until the top of the 14th when
Steve Harrington led off with a double. Pinch runner
Matt Pelcher moved to third on an out and came in to score on Rosso's single to left center.
Tristan Nemjo, who was making his first career start, pitched well for the Pride as the sophomore allowed an unearned run on three hits with four strikeouts in five innings of work.
Aljo Sujak went 1 1/3 innings without allowing a hit.
Mike McKenna followed with 2 1/3 innings before yielding to
Chris Keenan for the final 5 1/3 innings. Keenan allowed one hit with six strikeouts to earn his first win in a Hofstra uniform.
Justin Solt started for George Washington and allowed one run on five hits over seven innings with eight strikeouts. Trevor Kuncl, who threw 2/3 of an inning in the opener, went five innings in game two and allowed two hits with seven strikeouts. Rich Pfluger (0-1) took the loss for the Colonials, allowing a run on two hits in 1 2/3 innings.
