Trumbull, CT - Hofstra won four singles flights and took the doubles point in a 5-2 victory over Sacred Heart Sunday night at the Tennis Club of Trumbull. The win was the first career victory for Hofstra Tennis Head Coach
Richard Sipala. Hofstra moved to 1-0 with the victory while Sacred Heart dropped to 1-5 with the loss.
The teams split the first two doubles flights with Sacred Heart's William Wibner and Lefteri Apostolou winning at No. 1 over
Bo Cautaerts and
Josh Reynolds, 6-4. The Pride came back at No. 2 with a 7-5 victory by
Matthew Garcia and
Vincent Turina over Matyas Venci and Tyler Lowe. The deciding flight came down to a tiebreaker and the Pride prevailed, 7-6 (6), as
Ostap Kovalenko and
Kaita Odani came away with the win over Kevin Chao and Phillip Lynch.
Cautaerts got a measure of revenge in singles as he defeated Wibmer, 7-6 (4), 6-3 at No. 1. Kovalenko had a three-set win at No. 2 against Apostolou, dropping the first set 7-6 (3) before roaring back with a 6-0 win in the second and a 10-1 win in the third set tiebreaker. Turina had a 7-6 (4), 6-1 win at No. 5 over Antoine Hernandez and Reynolds got in the win column with a 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 6 over Lynch.
Hofstra is back in action Thursday, February 10 at 1 p.m., hosting Fairleigh Dickinson at Point Set Indoor in Oceanside.
