Jaylen Hines and
Jaala Henry combined for 25 points for Hofstra in a 73-50 Colonial Athletic Association loss to Towson Friday night at the David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex.
Hines led the way for Hofstra with 13 points while Henry had 12 points. Hines also pulled down six rebounds, tying for team-high honors with
Zyheima Swint.
The Tigers (21-5, 12-3 CAA) led 20-8 after one quarter, scoring the first five points of the game. The Pride (6-17, 3-12 CAA) got on the board 1:22 into the game on a
Rosi Nicholson basket. A 7-2 Towson run opened up a 12-4 lead with 3:41 to play before the Pride cut the deficit to six on Henry's jumper 50 seconds later. The Tigers followed with four consecutive free throws, and after a Pride bucket, Narrie Dodson and Kylie Kornegay-Lucas hit back-to-back jumpers to close out the scoring.
Towson would extend the lead to as many as 20 points, 30-10, in the second quarter following a three-pointer from Aleah Nelson. The Pride would go on a 6-0 run behind baskets from Henry and
Sorelle Ineza, and a pair of free throws from
Jahsyni Knight to make it a 30-16 game with 2:33 on the clock. Henry made it a 14-point game once again with 15 seconds to play but Nelson's three-point play with eight ticks remaining sent the visitors into halftime with a 17-point advantage, 38-21. Â Â Â
Hofstra outscored the Tigers, 16-10 over the first 6:34 of the third quarter to get within 11, 48-37, following a layup from Nicholson. But the Tigers would close the quarter with a 10-3 run to lead 58-40 after 30 minutes of action. Hines had seven points for the Pride in the quarter. The fourth quarter saw the Pride get as close as 16 points on a pair of occasions, the last at 62-46 with 4:34 to play on a layup from Henry. Towson would outscore the Pride, 11-4 the rest of the way for the 23-point victory.
Towson's Allie Kubek led all scorers with 18 points. Nelson finished with 16 points and six assists. Kornegay-Lucas had 11 rebounds to go along with eight points.
Hofstra concludes its home schedule Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. against James Madison. Sunday's game will be Hofstra's Senior Day with a pregame ceremony honoring the Pride's graduating seniors. It will also be Hofstra's Play4Kay game and the teams will wear pink uniforms in support of the Kay Yow Cancer Fund and breast cancer research.
