Bethpage, NY - The Hofstra University men's tennis team posted a 6-1 victory over its Nassau County rival, LIU, Friday afternoon at Sportime. The Pride won five of six singles flights and took both completed doubles matches.
Matthew Garcia and
Vincent Turina started the match with a 7-5 victory over Akhilendran Indrabalan and Philip Hilble at No. 3 doubles.
Bo Cautaerts and
Ostap Kovalenko clinched the point for the Pride with a 7-6 (9) victory over Ben Brandherm and Danila Ishchanka at No. 1 doubles.
Hofstra (2-1) carried its strong play into singles play as Cautaerts defeated Brandherm in three sets (4-6, 6-4, 13-11) at the No. 1 flight. Kovalenko posted a 6-4, 7-5 win over Ishchanka at No. 2. Garcia won in straight sets (7-5, 6-3) over Sergio Fernandez-Romera at the third flight, while Turina downed Indrabalan at No. 4, 6-4, 6-1.
Josh Reynolds closed out the Pride's flight wins with a three-set victory (6-1, 5-7, 6-7 (3)) at No. 5.
The Sharks (2-2) lone win came at No. 6 with Hilble posting a 6-3, 6-1 victory over
Kaita Odani.
Hofstra returns to action Sunday at Lehigh at 2 p.m.
