Jaquan Carlos had eight points, 13 assists, and seven steals to lead the Hofstra men's basketball team to a convincing 96-48 victory over Old Westbury on Thursday afternoon at "Class at the Court" Day at the David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex. The day featured thousands of local students learning about various careers before watching the game.
Hofstra upped its record to 7-6 with the win in its final non-conference game of the season. Old Westbury dropped to 1-8 with the loss.
Darlinstone Dubar led Hofstra with 23 points and added seven rebounds.
Warren Williams had a double-double for the Pride with 11 points and 14 rebounds.
An early 23-5 run for Hofstra erased all doubts in the contest as the Pride would lead 23-7 with 14:31 left in the opening half following a basket from Dubar.
Tyler Thomas had three three-pointers in the game's opening five minutes to push the Pride to the dominating advantage. Hofstra would close the half on a 7-1 run to take a 34-point lead into the break as
German Plotnikov finished the first half scoring with a three-pointer with 41 seconds remaining.
Hofstra pushed the lead to 40 less than three minutes into the second stanza as another three-pointer from Thomas made it 67-27. A dunk from Williams with 4:58 left in regulation gave the Pride a 55-point advantage, 94-39, and marked Hofstra's largest lead of the contest.
Amar'e Marshall added 15 points, six rebounds, and six assists for Hofstra, which also got 14 points and five rebounds from Thomas.
Zachary Cummings led Old Westbury with 20 points, while Max Weinberg had seven points and 11 rebounds.
Hofstra is off until opening Colonial Athletic Association play on Thursday, December 29 at Delaware. That game will tip at 7 p.m. and air nationally on the CBS Sports Network.
NOTES
- Hofstra is now 2-0 all-time against Old Westbury. This was the first meeting between the teams since November 24, 2008.
- Carlos's 13 assists were the most for a Pride player since Juan'ya Green had 14 against Northeastern on January 21, 2016.
- Hofstra's 29 assists were one shy of the program record of 30 set against New York Tech during the 2019-20 season.
