Darlinstone Dubar led Hofstra with 13 points and
Warren Williams added a season-high 12 points, but it wasn't enough as the Hofstra men's basketball team dropped a 71-56 decision to Massachusetts on Sunday evening at the Barclays Center. The game was part of the Hall of Fame Invitational.
Hofstra, which played without leading scorer
Aaron Estrada for the second consecutive game, fell to 6-5 with the loss. Massachusetts improved to 8-2 on the year.
Holding a one-point advantage, 8-7, early in the contest, the Pride scored seven straight to earn a 15-7 lead following a three-pointer from
Jaquan Carlos. UMass battled back and used a 13-2 run to lead 20-17 with just under nine minutes left in the half. Trailing by five with under three minutes left in the opening stanza, Hofstra got three-pointers from
Tyler Thomas and
Griffin Barrouk to send the teams into the intermission knotted at 30.
The game would still be tied at 38 just over four minutes into the second half before Massachusetts took control with a 12-3 run to lead 50-41 with 10:47 left. The Pride was unable to get on track offensively in the final 20 minutes as the Minutemen pulled away for the 15-point victory.
In addition to Williams reaching double figures for the first time in his Pride career, Barrouk had 11 points off the bench for Hofstra. Dubar had a team-best seven rebounds in the game.
Tafara Gapare led the MInutemen with 13 points. Matt Cross and Dyondre Dominguez each had 12 points and nine rebounds for UMass.
Hofstra finally gets an extended break in its schedule as it will next be in action on Monday, December 19 when it travels to South Florida for a 7 p.m. game. That contest will air on ESPN+.
NOTES
- Hofstra is now 1-3 all-time against Massachusetts. This marked the first meeting between the teams since the 2008-09 campaign.
- Hofstra scored 26 points off the bench in the contest.
- Today marked the program's fourth-ever appearance at the Barclays Center.
