Dramatic Win Pushes Pride To 14-0 In CAA Action; Best-Ever CAA Start

Hempstead, NY - Redshirt senior Zyare Abdul-Rahim had a match-high 20 kills, while sophomore Beatriz Alves tallied a career-best 56 assists, including the 2,000th of her career, to lead the Hofstra volleyball team to a dramatic four-set win over Northeastern on Sunday afternoon at the David S. Mack Physical Education Center.

The 14-0 mark in Colonial Athletic Association play is the program's best-ever start in league play since joining the conference in 2001. The 2006 squad began the season with 13 consecutive CAA wins.

Alves added a career-high tying 15 digs, four kills, and two service aces to her afternoon, while sophomore Chiara Cucco picked up a spectacular 31 digs.

Hofstra is 17-9 overall now in addition to the conference record. Northeastern fell to 11-12 and 8-6 in league play. Set scores were 25-22, 22-25, 25-17, and 34-32. It was the first time reaching 30 points in a set since a 30-28 win in the third set against Northeastern on November 8, 2017. It is the most points Hofstra has scored in a set since the start of 25-point sets in sets one through four in 2008.

The two teams alternated 25-22 wins in the first two sets with the Pride capturing set one. The third set would see the Pride dominate and take a 2-1 lead in the match with an eight-point victory. An incredible fourth-set ensued with neither team giving an inch as the stanza featured 15 tie scores and seven lead changes. Incredibly, the final set featured a mind-blowing 12 combined set points with Hofstra finally ending the match with back-to-back kills from freshmen Emilly Nunes and Izadora Stedile

Stedile had a career-high tying 17 kills and 12 digs for the Pride, which also got seven blocks and six kills from redshirt senior Sarah Pierre. Sophomore Florencia Wolkowyski keyed the Pride in the middle of the match and posted seven kills and four digs in the contest.

Defne Arliel had 11 kills, 11 digs, and five blocks for Northeastern, while Erica Staunton added 10 kills and 13 digs for the Huskies.

Hofstra will close the regular season next weekend when it travels to Towson for a pair of matches. The Pride and the Tigers will do battle on Saturday and Sunday at 1 p.m. Both matches will air on FloVolleyball.
