Hempstead, NY – The Hofstra women's basketball team scored 47 points and shot .606 percent from the floor in the second half of its 73-49 home win over Alliance Wednesday afternoon from the David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex. Hofstra improves its record to 2-2 on the year following the win.
Sophomore
Zaniyyah Ross-Barnes led the way with 13 points on 6-6 shooting from the floor and added seven rebounds, while freshman
Kayley Joseph-Bernard pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds and scored nine points. Junior
Ally Knights assisted six Hofstra baskets and recorded five rebounds, and
Brandy Thomas pitched in with 10 points and six rebounds.
After a slow start the opening quarter, the Pride took a two-point lead on a jumper from freshman
Emma Von Essen and never looked back, widening the lead to 10 by the end of the first quarter on 13 straight points. The Warriors (0-2) closed the gap to one point with nine unanswered points, but a three-pointer from
Alarice Gooden put an end to the Alliance run with 6:10 to go in the second quarter. Hofstra would go into the halftime break ahead of Alliance, 26-19.
The Pride broke the game open with a 24-8 third quarter, where Hofstra shot .625 percent from the floor and limited Alliance to just .273 shooting. A fast-break basket from Thomas kicked off an 11-2 run for the Pride to pull ahead by 16, and the hosts continued to pour it on with 11 of the final 15 points of the quarter to go into the fourth ahead, 50-27.
After an Alliance three to start the fourth quarter, Hofstra widened its already large lead to 30 with a 10-0 run with jumpers from Ross-Barnes and senior
Sorelle Ineza, and six points from graduate student
Rosi Nicholson. The Pride rode out the remainder of the quarter, never letting their lead fall below 20 points in the second consecutive home win.
Carly Bolivar led Alliance with 14 points, and Josie Pool scored 11 for the Warriors.
Hofstra's next contest is on Saturday, November 26, against Wagner. Tip-off from Staten Island is set for 3 p.m.
NOTES:
-This was the first-ever game between Hofstra and Alliance.
-Hofstra shot a season-high .443 percent from the floor and held Alliance to .333 percent shooting.
-The Pride dominated the boards, with 45 total rebounds to just 33 for the Warriors.
-Hofstra saw season-bests in field goals, field goal percentage, and steals against Alliance.
-Hofstra finished with more points from the bench than its opponent for the fourth consecutive game this season.
