San Jose, CA -
Aaron Estrada poured in a game-high 27 and added five assists and three rebounds as the Hofstra men's basketball team rallied from a 14-point deficit and earned an 85-76 victory over San Jose State on Thursday evening at the Provident Credit Union Event Center.
Hofstra got a huge contribution from
Nelson Boachie-Yiadom, who played 37 minutes in the contest and added eight points, eight rebounds, and three assists.
Tyler Thomas (15) and
German Plotnikov (12) joined Estrada in double figures.
The win moves Hofstra to a perfect 4-0 on the season. It is the Pride's best start to a season since the 2004-05 squad began the year with nine consecutive wins. San Jose State suffered its first loss of the season and fell to 3-1.
A three pointer just over seven minutes into the game from Thomas gave the Pride an early three-point lead before the Spartans scored 15 straight points to lead 26-12 with 7:35 left in the opening stanza following a basket from Sage Tolbert. The lead hovered around 10 the rest of the half with SJSU taking a 41-31 lead into the break after Estrada scored with 34 seconds left to close the gap.
The Spartans still held a 13-point lead, 56-43, with 13:23 left in regulation before Hofstra began to mount its comeback. The Pride put together a game-changing 20-3 run over the next 7:28 to move in front by the score of 63-59 as
Jaquan Carlos drained a shot in the paint and forced the home team into a time out. Thomas got the run started with the first five points and Hofstra held San Jose State without a field goal for a five-plus minute span to take over the contest.
Hofstra put the finishing touches on a solid comeback and great road win with a 13-2 run that made it 78-66 with under a minute to play after a pair of free throws from Estrada.
Hofstra shot over 50% from the field for the third time this season and drained 10 or more three-pointers for the third consecutive game. The Pride also went to the free throw line a season-high 30 times.
Amar'e Marshall chipped in with nine points and four rebounds for the Pride.
Alvaro Cardenas and Tibet Gorener each had 17 points for San Jose State, while Omari Moore added 16 points, six assists, and five rebounds.
Hofstra is back in action on Saturday when it travels to Saint Mary's for a 5:30 p.m. local game. The game, which is at 8:30 p.m. New York time, will air on the WCC Network.
