Hofstra Blanks Charleston In Regular Season Finale

Hempstead, NY - Hendrik Hebbeker scored a pair of first half goals, while Eliot Goldthorp, Owen Barnett, and Marcelo Lage had one goal each as Hofstra picked up a 5-0 Colonial Athletic Association victory over Charleston Saturday afternoon at Hofstra Soccer Stadium. The game was the Pride's regular season finale and served as Hofstra's Senior Day as well.

Hofstra, which won for the second consecutive game and is unbeaten in its last four outings, improved to 11-3-3 overall and 5-2-2 in the CAA. Charleston dropped to 5-7-5 overall and 3-4-2 in league action.

The Pride did not waste any time in getting started as Hebbeker took a pass from Shane Salmon just 2:42 into the game and scored his first goal of the season with a right-footed shot from just inside the box into the lower right corner. Goldthorp made it a 2-0 game when he converted a penalty kick at 11:57.  Hebbeker closed out the first half scoring at 32:24 with an unassisted goal.

The second half saw the Pride keep up the pressure, breaking through once again at 55:41 when Owen Barnett collected a pass from Oliver Svalander in front of the goal, spun around and put a shot past keeper Justin Bauer for his first collegiate goal. Hofstra got its final goal just about 10 minutes later when Lorenzo Selini's long cross from the right side found the head of Marcelo Lage for a 5-0 lead.

Hofstra's defense limited the Cougars to just six shots on the day and just one on goal as Wessel Speel was called on to make one save in 76 minutes of action. Alex Dudley played the final 14 and did not face a shot. Bauer made five saves in goal for the Cougars.

Hofstra will learn its CAA Championship fate later tonight. The Pride have clinched a berth but could be the No. 2 seed, have a bye and host a quarterfinal and semifinal game if Elon defeats UNCW tonight at 7 p.m.
