Hofstra Picks Up Big Win Over UNCW In The Rain

Hempstead, NY - The freshman Icelandic duo of Dagny Run Petursdottir and Thorhildur Thorhallsdottir scored goals and the Hofstra defense held the Seahawks offense in check as the Pride picked up a much-needed 2-1 Colonial Athletic Association win over UNCW Thursday night at a rainy Hofstra Soccer Stadium.

The win gave Hofstra three points in the CAA standings with the Pride fighting for one of the eight berths in the CAA Championship, which begins in two weeks. Hofstra is tied with Charleston for ninth place with eight points and plays the Cougars on Sunday.

The Pride improved to 7-6-3 overall and 2-3-2 in CAA play with the victory. UNCW slipped to 7-6-2 overall and 3-3-1 in league action.

Petursdottir, a native of Kopavogur, Iceland, put the Pride on the board at the 8:22 mark when she sent in the rebound of Wiktoria Fronc's shot for a 1-0 lead. Twenty minutes later, the Seahawks took advantage of a Hofstra miscue to tie the score as Pride keeper Skylar Kuzmich came off her line to attempt a clear and mishit the ball right to Morgan Nanni, who chipped it over her head and into the goal for the equalizer. Thorhallsdottir, a Reykjavik, Iceland native came up big for the Pride at the 38:08 mark when she went up high to head in a long service off the foot of Leah Iglesias to put the Pride back on top.

Hofstra defense limited the Seahawks to just six total shots and four on goal. Kuzmich would make three saves in the contest with two coming in the scoreless second half.

Hanna Wise made two saves for the Seahawks.

Hofstra will host Charleston Sunday at 12 p.m..
