Hofstra Extends Unbeaten Streak To Nine With Convincing Win

Hempstead, NY - Eliot Goldthorp had a goal and two assists and six Hofstra players recorded at least one point as the Pride defeated visiting Saint Joseph's, 4-0, Tuesday night at Hofstra Soccer Stadium. The win was Hofstra's fourth consecutive and extended its unbeaten streak to nine games (8-0-1).

The Pride, who received votes in the United Soccer Coaches Poll this week, improved to 9-2-1 on the season with the win, while Saint Joseph's dropped to 2-5-6.

Hofstra would score three first half goals with Goldthorp setting up the first, by Ryan Carmichael, with a precise cross into the box that Carmichael easily headed in for a 1-0 lead at the 20:17 mark. Goldthorp also had a hand in the Pride's second goal as his corner kick was headed by Oliver Svalander and then by Marcelo Lage into the net for a 2-0 lead at 22:39. The Pride sophomore closed out the first half scoring at 40:04 when he took a pass outside of the box and sent a low shot towards the goal. Carmichael made a run at the goal and obstructed the view of Hawks keeper Lars Haavie, allowing the shot to go in.

The Pride added a second half goal with Lorenzo Selini netting the first of his career, off a pass from Svalander, at 55:39. Svalander had the ball right in front of the goal, but was marked and sent a pass to Selini near the top of the box and the sophomore drove a shot into the left side of the goal to make it 4-0 and close out the scoring.

Hofstra outshot the Hawks, 16-5, and limited Saint Joseph's to just two shots on goal. Wessel Speel stopped both for his fourth shutout of the season. Haavie had one save for the Hawks.

Hofstra will return to action Saturday in a huge Colonial Athletic Association game against Elon. The Pride and the Phoenix are tied atop the CAA standings at 4-1-1. Kick-off at Hofstra Soccer Stadium is 1 p.m.
