Harrisonburg, VA - Junior
Aaron Estrada had 20 points, seven rebounds, and seven assists, while redshirt senior
Abayomi Iyiola added 15 points and 15 rebounds to lead the Hofstra men's basketball team to an 87-80 road win over James Madison on Sunday evening at the Atlantic Union Bank Center. Hofstra held James Madison without a point over the final 3:45 of the game and outscored the Dukes, 8-0, during that span to earn the win.
Hofstra won for the fourth time in its last five games and improved to 9-6 and 1-1 in Colonial Athletic Association play. It was the Pride's first game since December 29. James Madison, which was in action for the first time since December 11, fell to 9-3 and 0-1 in league play with the loss.
James Madison scored the first seven points of the game before a dunk from sophomore
Darlinstone Dubar got Hofstra on the board. That basket would kick-start a 9-2 Pride run that knotted the score at nine on a three-pointer from Estrada with 16:04 left before halftime. A quick 5-0 run for Hofstra would push the lead in the Pride's favor at 16-12 after a basket from junior
Caleb Burgess and three free throws from Iyiola. James Madison would take its largest lead of the first half at eight, 35-27, as the Dukes used an 11-2 run to earn a 35-27 advantage with 5:07 left before intermission following an old-fashioned three-point play. The Pride recovered, though, and Hofstra would outscore James Madison, 10-3, over the final three minutes of the first stanza to close the gap to one. The Pride got a pair of three-pointers in the final three minutes as Burgess and Dubar helped to make it a one-point game.
Graduate studen
Jalen Ray came up huge to start the second half as he hit a pair of three-pointers in the opening minute to give Hofstra a five-point cushion at 49-44. James Madison used a 9-0 run to retake the lead at 55-51 on a Vado Morse three-pointer with 16:58 left. In an entertaining back and forth second half, Hofstra was able to regain the lead at 57-55 with 15:07 showing on the clock after a basket from Iyiola.
Neither team was able to take more than a three-point lead over the next few minutes as the Dukes led 67-64 with 9:21 remaining before Dubar immediately answered for Hofstra with a three-pointer to even the score.
James Madison would hold the slimmest of leads at 80-79 with 3:45 left following a free throw from Takal Molson before Hofstra took control. A pair of free throws from senior
Omar Silverio put the Pride back in front and Hofstra would leave no doubt down the stretch as Iyiola pushed the lead to three and was followed by a combined four free throws from Estrada and Iyiola to account for the final margin.
Dubar finished with 19 points for Hofstra, which also got 15 points from Ray. Burgess was huge throughout the game off the bench for Hofstra with seven points in 27 minutes of action.
Morse had 24 points for James Madison, while Molson added 16 for the Dukes.
Hofstra continues the road trip on Tuesday when it heads to Towson for a 5 p.m. contest. That game will air nationally on the CBS Sports Network.
