WREST: Hofstra Hosts Bucknell in First of Four Consecutive Home Matches

Hempstead, NY - Following a lengthy break from competition, the Hofstra wrestling team welcomes Bucknell on Saturday, January 8, in the first of four consecutive duals inside the David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex. The first match is set to take place at 3:30 p.m.

Sitting at 2-6 overall and 1-1 in the EIWA entering the new year, the Pride returns to the mat for the first time since December 20-21 at the Journeymen Collegiate Wrestling Duals in Niceville, Florida, where they took on #8 Virginia Tech, #6 Arizona State, and #22 Northern Iowa. The Pride suffered a 35-3 defeat to the Hokies, a 42-4 loss to the Sun Devils, and a 33-9 loss to the Panthers. Jacob Moon (125), Michael Leandrou (149), Charles Small (184) and Trey Rogers (197) all picked up wins during the two-day competition.

Hofstra's tentative line-up against Bucknell is freshmen Moon (1-7) or Dylan Acevedo-Switzer (1-8) at 125; freshman Ty Cymmerman (2-6) or redshirt sophomore Matthew Templeton (0-0) at 133; sophomore Justin Hoyle (6-7) at 141; sophomore Leandrou (5-10) at 149; freshman Joe McGinty (7-7) at 157; redshirt senior Ricky Stamm (7-6) at 165; redshirt freshman Ross McFarland (2-4) or freshman Ericson Velasquez (0-3) at 174; Small (8-5) at 184; Rogers (8-4) at 197; and redshirt senior Zachary Knighton-Ward (9-4) at 285. Small and Knighton-Ward continue to represent the Pride in the national media rankings, with Small ranking #27 by InterMat and Knighton-Ward is ranked #19 by InterMat and #20 by The Open Mat.

Sporting a 4-2 dual meet record and coming off a 13th-place team finish at the MadMat Open on December 29-30, Bucknell will first take on Long Island in Brookville at noon before squaring off with the Pride at 3:30 p.m. 2021 All-American Zach Hartman continues to make a name for himself at 165 pounds, entering Saturday at 13-3 and ranked inside the top 20 in all major college wrestling rankings. Kolby DePron leads the Bison with 15 wins on the year at 149 pounds.

Following Saturday's home-opener, Hofstra will return to action on Saturday, January 15, against Buffalo at 1 p.m., followed by an EIWA match against Navy on Sunday, January 16, at 4 p.m.
