VB: Hofstra Routs Stony Brook In The Long Island Rivalry

Stony Brook, NY - Graduate student Ana Martinovic slammed down a match-high 12 kills and added seven digs to lead the Hofstra volleyball team to a dominating three-set sweep of Stony Brook on Tuesday evening in The Long Island Rivalry at Pritchard Gymnasium.

Hofstra is now 11-1 all-time against Stony Brook. The Pride has won nine straight matches against the Seawolves.

Set scores were 25-16, 25-23, and 25-23 in favor of the Pride.

Hofstra is now 5-3 overall, while Stony Brook is 2-5. It is the Pride's second straight victory overall and fourth win in their last five matches.

The Pride's defensive keyed Hofstra's rout in the first set as they held Stony Brook to a .000 attack percentage in pulling away for the commanding victory.

Hofstra would need a rally in the second stanza as the Seawolves held a late 21-20 lead before a kill from Martinovic and a service ace from sophomore Yagmur Cinel put the Pride back in front. Stony Brook knotted the score back at 23 before kills from Martinovic and freshman Florencia Wolkowyski ended the set and put the Pride ahead 2-0 in the match.

It was another tight set in the third with the score knotted at 20 until a 3-0 Pride run, including a block from sophomore Bianca Bucciarelli and junior Sarah Pierre, gave Hofstra the lead for good and a kill from junior Athina Dimitriaidis ended the set and the match in the Pride's favor.

Freshman Chiara Cucco finished with a match-high 18 digs, while freshman Beatriz Alves added 28 assists, eight digs, and four service aces. Pierre posted five blocks in the win.

Amiyah De'Long had 11 kills for Stony Brook, which also got 16 digs and six assists from Kiani Kerstetter.

Hofstra is back in action this weekend when it travels to the Ellis Rowland Memorial Tournament at Colgate. The Pride will face Cleveland State on Friday before taking on Princeton and Colgate on Saturday.
