WSOC: Second Half Burst Powers #25 Hofstra Past Columbia

NEW YORK, N.Y. – The Hofstra University women's soccer team (4-1) scored three goals in under five minutes during the second half to roll past Columbia University (0-2-1), by a 3-0 score on Thursday, September 2.

It was a dominating performance for the Pride who out-shot the Lions, 21-3 and held a 10-0 edge in shots on goal. Hofstra also garnered a season-high 10 corner kicks on the evening to just three for Columbia.

Lucy Porter, Ellen Halseth, and Lucy Shepherd all scored for Hofstra, while Shepherd and Miri Taylor posted assists.

After a scoreless first half, the Hofstra offense exploded out of the break to take complete control of the contest. A ball played into the box by Shepherd was touched across to Porter for her first goal of the season and the opening goal of the contest during the 52nd minute to give the Blue and Gold the lead. Just 42 seconds later, Halseth sent a right-footed shot from outside the box under the crossbar to double the advantage. Hofstra capped off the burst with a goal by Shepherd directly off of a corner kick on the right side of the pitch to give Hofstra a 3-0 lead.

The Pride continued to hold Columbia at bay the rest of the way, cruising to their third victory of the season.

Hofstra will return to the pitch on Sunday, September 5 when it hosts the University of Pennsylvania at 12 p.m. at the Hofstra Soccer Stadium.
