Hamilton, NY - Freshman
Florencia Wolkowyski had a team-best 12 kills and added eight digs, while junior
Zyare Abdul-Rahim tallied 12 kills and six blocks, but it wasn't enough as the Hofstra volleyball team dropped a four-set match to Colgate on Saturday evening at the Ellis Rowland Memorial Tournament.
The loss drops Hofstra's record to 6-5 this season, while Colgate improves to 3-6 with the win. Set scores were 25-23, 25-15, 27-29, and 25-19.
Hofstra fell behind 2-0 in the match as Colgate won a tight first stanza before pulling away for a commanding victory in the second set.
The third set saw the Pride trail 20-19 before sophomore
Damla Tokman keyed a 3-0 scoring run to make it a 22-20 lead for Hofstra. The two teams would battle back and forth with the set knotted at 27 before Tokman came up big again with kills on the final two points to help the Pride capture the third set. The fourth set looked to be headed to a close ending as well with the score tied at 17 after a block from junior
Sarah Pierre and Abdul-Rahim. That would be the final tie score, though, as after a Tokman kill made it 19-18 in favor of Colgate, the home squad scored four straight points to put them in a position to capture the set and the match.
Pierre tallied a career-best 11 blocks for Hofstra, while freshman
Beatriz Alves had 34 assists and freshman
Chiara Cucco added 19 digs. Tokman finished with 11 kills for the Pride.
Harper Snyder had 13 kills and five blocks for Colgate, while Julia Kurowski added 48 assists and 12 digs.
Hofstra returns to the court next Saturday, September 18, when it opens Colonial Athletic Association play by hosting Towson. The Pride and the Tigers will meet on Saturday and Sunday with both matches beginning at 1 p.m. Both contests will air on FloVolleyball.
