Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | Rachel Vogel

WSOC: Hofstra Pushes No. 7 Penn State to the Limit

University Park, PA – The Hofstra University women's soccer team (3-1-0) had a very strong outing and dominated in chances but ultimately fell to the seventh-ranked Penn State Nittany Lions (3-0-0) by a slim 2-1 decision at Jeffrey Field on Sunday afternoon.

Despite the final outcome, Hofstra controlled the pace nearly the entire match, posting a 19-9 advantage on shots and 7-5 edge in corner kicks. Junior goalkeeper Skylar Kuzmich did an excellent job in holding the Big Ten preseason favorites to just two goals, compiling a season-high four saves on the day including a couple one-on-one opportunities.

Senior Miri Taylor notched her team-leading fourth goal of the season, sliding in a shot off a pass from junior Ellen Halseth.

Hofstra held an early advantage in shot opportunities, however Penn State capitalized on its first two chances of the day as Payton Linnehan got the Nittany Lions on the scoreboard in just the fourth minute of action before Ally Schlegel doubled the lead just before the 15-minute mark.

The Pride responded in the 21st minute when Halseth dribbled up the left side and found Taylor who poked one past the Penn State goalkeeper directly in front of the net, cutting the score to 2-1.

Hofstra carried an 11-6 advantage in opportunities into halftime while Kuzmich made two first-half stops.

Despite the uneven score, Hofstra never let up and continued to give Penn State all it could handle. Hofstra posted an 8-3 advantage in shots during the second half, while Kuzmich made two saves that kept Penn State from increasing its lead any further.

Taylor led the Hofstra attack with five shots, including three on goal. Lucy Porter, Georgia Brown, and Ellen Halseth all took three chances, with Brown recording the Pride's final shot on goal.

Hofstra will look to continue its road stand as it travels to Columbia on Thursday, September 2 for a 7 p.m. meeting with the Lions. The game will be streamed live on ESPN+.

NOTES:
-Hofstra is now 0-8-0 all-time against Penn State.
-It was head coach Simon Riddiough's 22nd career match against a ranked opponent.
-Miri Taylor has recorded at least one point in all four matches this season. She now has 62 for her career, leaving her two away from cracking into Hofstra's top-10 all-time in that category.
-It was Hofstra's third match this season against a conference favorite. Hofstra faced the America East preseason favorite in Stony Brook, Ivy League preseason favorite in Brown, and the Big Ten preseason favorite in Penn State.
