WSOC: Shepherd's Hat Trick Leads Hofstra to Commanding Win over Stony Brook

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – Lucy Shepherd tallied her first career hat trick and the Hofstra University women's soccer team claimed Long Island bragging rights for the 12th consecutive time with a commanding 5-1 victory over rival Stony Brook University to open the 2021 campaign on Thursday, August 19.

Shepherd posted seven total points in the win, adding an assist to her three-goal output. Miri Taylor and Amanda Ebbesson each scored once for the Pride, with Lucy Porter leading the way with two helpers on the evening. Hofstra limited Stony Brook to just one shot during the dominating effort.

It took just five minutes for Hofstra to set the tone when Taylor volleyed home a throw in from Shepherd to give the Blue and Gold a 1-0 advantage. During the 13th minute, Shepherd netted her first strike of the game as Porter laid off a beautiful pass to the left wing, setting up an empty-net opportunity to double the early lead. The Pride continued to dominate the remainder of the half and took the two-goal lead into the locker room.

Just moments into the second half, a loose ball in the box found its way to Shepherd who volleyed one into the back of the net for her second goal. During the 61st minute, the fifth-year midfielder scored a highlight-reel goal when she lofted a curling left-footed shot from 22 yards out into the top left corner of the frame to complete the hat trick and put the match out of reach for good.

Stony Brook scored on its lone shot of the evening and Ebbesson finished off a through ball from Taylor to put an exclamation point on the victory. The goal marked Ebbesson's first in a Pride uniform.

The Pride will look to ride the early season momentum on Saturday, Aug. 22 when it travels north to the University at Albany for a 2 p.m. tilt with the Great Danes.

NOTES
  • The hat trick for Shepherd was the first of her career and first by a Pride player since Porter scored three goals against Towson on April 10, 2021.
