Hempstead, NY - Hofstra University Head Tennis Coach Jason Pasion announced his resignation today after five seasons in charge of the Pride's men and women's tennis programs. Pasion is returning to the medical field and in addition will hold a position as director of tennis at Sportime in Lynbrook, New York.
"Going back to work as a physician assistant during the COVID-19 pandemic made me realize that I want to return to the healthcare field," said Pasion. "I also wanted to stay involved in the sport I love, which made the position at Sportime appealing. Ultimately, I will be able to spend more time with my wife and two sons. I want to thank
Rick Cole Jr. and the Hofstra athletic administration for their support during these past five years. I wish the Pride all the best and look forward to assisting the program in any capacity in the future."
Â
During his five seasons at Hofstra, the men and women's programs won 42 and 36 matches, respectively. For the first time in program history, both teams sent representatives to the Intercollegiate Tennis Association All-American Championships. Pasion coached four student-athletes (3 men, 1 woman) to All-Colonial Athletic Association accolades during his tenure.
Â
In his inaugural campaign, Pasion coached the men's doubles team of Niko Vulinovich and Coco Haener to a No. 7 position in the ITA Northeast Regional Rankings, the first time a Hofstra doubles team earned a spot in the regional rankings. In May 2019, Pasion was named the Long Island College Coach of the Year by the United States Tennis Association Eastern Region after leading the men's team to 13 wins, one shy of the school record, and the women's team to 12 victories.
Â
Hofstra also enjoyed a great deal of academic success under Coach Pasion as both teams earned ITA All-Academic Team honors in each of his five seasons and 32 student-athletes earned ITA Scholar-Athlete accolades. In addition,
Alejandra Ruffini was a CoSIDA Academic All-Distroct selection under Pasion's tutelage.Â
Â
Pasion, who graduated from Oswego is 2000 with a degree in psychology and earned a degree in physician assistant studies in 2007 from Touro College, worked in the specialty of primary care/family medicine before starting his coaching career.
