Madison Burns had a strong outing in the circle, allowing just two hits with three strikeouts without issuing a walk, but the Hofstra softball team came up on the short end of 1-0 matchup against the fourth-seeded Delaware Blue Hens in the Colonial Athletic Association opener.
Hofstra moves on to face the loser of No. 2 Drexel and No. 3 Elon in an elimination game at Eagle Field at Veterans Memorial Park this evening.
Delaware capitalized on an error in the bottom of the fourth inning to score the game's lone run.
Junior
Jaycee Ruberti reached twice for Hofstra, first on an infield single and later on a walk, and junior
Madison McKevitt added another hit for Hofstra in the fifth. The Pride put two runners on in the top of the seventh as junior
Angelina Ioppolo was hit by a pitch and senior
Devyn Losco reached on a fielding error, but a fielder's choice and strikeout ended Hofstra's chance.
Emily Winburn improved to 13-2 on the year inside the circle for the Blue Hens, while Burns dropped to 6-12.
Hofstra fell to 16-15 overall on the season while Delaware moves to 23-7.
