Harrisonburg, Va. – The Hofstra University softball team saw its 2021 season came to a close on Wednesday evening as the third-seeded Elon Phoenix defeated the Pride, 11-3 in six innings in the Colonial Athletic Association Championship at Veterans Memorial Park.
Four Hofstra players had one hit on the evening, including sophomore
Chelsea Manto, junior
Meghan Giordano, junior
Angelina Ioppolo, and senior
Devyn Losco, while Ruberti drove in one run for the Pride.
Hofstra took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning when Elon pitcher, Alexa Nemeth, made a throwing error on a ground ball off the bat of junior
Meghan Giordano, allowing Manto and Ruberti to score. Elon responded with four runs in the third inning, including two unearned, giving the Phoenix a 4-2 lead over the Pride.
Elon added three runs during the fourth inning, highlighted by a two-run single by Rebecca Murray to stretch the lead to five runs. The Pride tried to halt the momentum during the fifth inning when Ruberti drove home
Kasey Collins with a sacrifice fly. The threat was quickly stopped, however, as the Phoenix turned a double play to strand a runner on third base and keep the four-run advantage in tact heading into the sixth inning. Elon posted two runs on a single through the right side of the infield and eventually ended the game with a home run over the right field fence to earn the eight-run win.
Hofstra concludes the 2021 season with a 16-16 overall record and clinched its first CAA Championship berth since 2018.
