BB: Hofstra Runs Win Streak To Five With Doubleheader Sweep

Hempstead, NY - Jimmy Joyce struck out 12 batters in six shutout innings in game one and the Pride broke open the game with seven runs in the eighth in a 9-0 victory over Delaware Saturday at University Field. Hofstra completed the sweep with an 8-7 win in game two, as Tristan Nemjo and Brad Camarda held the Blue Hens scoreless for the final four innings.

Hofstra, which extended its winning streak to five games, improves to 15-14 overall and 6-8 in Colonial Athletic Association play. Delaware falls to 8-17 overall and 4-11 in the CAA with its seventh straight loss.

The teams wrap up the four-game series Sunday at 1 p.m.

Game 1 Recap
Hofstra opened the scoring in the third as Alex Sica led off with a double and would later come in to score on Rob Weissheier's sacrifice fly. The Pride tacked on a second run in the fourth as Will Kennedy singled and scored on Sica's single through the left side.

The two runs was more than enough for Joyce (3-2) as he scattered seven hits and walked one over his six innings. He struck out the side twice, including the sixth inning after Delaware loaded the bases with one out. He also had at least one strikeout in all six innings.

Relievers Michael O'Hanlon, Chris Mott, Aljo Sujak, Andrew Mundy and John Mikolaicyk combined to shut the Blue Hens down the rest of the way and Hofstra erupted for seven runs in the eighth to put the game out of reach. Hofstra loaded the bases with no outs and before Anthony D'Onofrio delivered an RBI single. Brian Goulard walked in another run before Kennedy had a two-run double. Sica had an RBI ground out, Austin Gauthier an RBI single and Weissheier drove in a run with a bases loaded hit by pitch.

Delaware starter Dom Velazquez (2-6) took the loss after allowing two runs on five hits with eight strikeouts over seven innings.

Game 2 Recap
Delaware jumped out to a 4-0 lead after the top of the second inning before the pride scored five times in the bottom of the second to take a one-run lead. Aidan Larkin had the big hit, a three-run double to the gap in right center. Weissheier would add a two-run single to drive in the other two Hofstra runs in the inning.

The Blue Hens would tie the score in the third on a solo home run from Joey Loynd. However, Hofstra would pull ahead once again in the fourth. Larkin had a one-out double and came in to score on a throwing error while Weissheier would strike again with a run scoring ground out to make it a 7-5 game.

Delaware had one more answer and tied the game in the fifth as it loaded the bases and scored one run on a hit batsman and a second on an error on what would have been the third out of the inning.

The Pride would get the last laugh as Nick Marrero led off the sixth with a single and went to second on a single by Larkin. A walk to Gauthier loaded the bases and Santino Rosso followed with a sacrifice fly for what proved to be the winning run.

Nemjo (1-1), who came on in the top of the sixth, allowed a hit and a walk with two strikeouts in two innings to earn his first collegiate win. Camarda was dominant in the final two innings, allowing just one hit while striking out five including the side in the top of the ninth to earn his first save.

Mike Biasiello (1-3) took the loss in relief for Delaware, allowing one run on four hits over 4 2/3 innings.

Notes:
-Joyce's 12 strikeouts were the second-highest total of his career and he eclipsed the 100-career strikeout mark in the game, becoming the 22nd player in program history with 100 strikeouts. He now has 103.
-Delaware stranded 23 runners over the two games compared to 13 for Hofstra.
-Weissheier had five RBIs on the afternoon.
-Larkin had his first career three-hit game, the first two doubles of his career and his first multi-RBI contest in game 2.
-Sica and Kennedy each had two hits and two RBIs in game 1 with Kennedy adding two more hits in the nightcap.
