MLAX: Second Half Comeback Propels Hofstra to Victory Over Fairfield

Hempstead, NY – The Hofstra men's lacrosse team exploded for 12 goals in the second half and redshirt senior Bobby Casey tied a career-high for saves with 17 as the Pride roared to an 18-14 comeback win over Fairfield Friday night in the final regular season game of the season from James M. Shuart Stadium.

The Pride snaps a three-game losing streak and closes the regular season at 7-5 overall and 4-4 in the Colonial Athletic Association. For the Stags, their season ends at 2-9 overall and 0-8 in the conference.

Seniors James Philbin and Riley Forte got the scoring started for the Pride as teams traded tallies to start the first quarter before the horn sounded with the score tied at 2-2. Hofstra took an early second quarter lead after scores from senior Bryce Tolmie and sophomore Sam Lutfi, but Fairfield struck back with a pair of their own goals to level the score at 4-4. Fairfield scored five of the next seven goals, including four straight in a 2:51 span to head into the break leading the Pride 10-6.

After the teams found the back of the net three times each in the first 6:32, Hofstra rattled off four unanswered goals in the final 5:11 of the third quarter to tie that game at 13-13. Graduate student Lynskey completed his hat-trick to start the run, followed by back-to-back goals by senior Dylan McIntosh and a strike by senior Ryan Tierney. The Pride took the lead off of McIntosh's third goal thanks to an excellent defensive ride by Lynskey, forcing the Fairfield defenseman into making a pass that was easily intercepted and finished by McIntosh. Fairfield snapped the run and tied the lead once again, but Tierney's second goal of the day put the Pride ahead for good. Goals by McIntosh, Philbin and Tierney sealed the win for Hofstra and kept its CAA Championship hopes alive.

Tierney's six points led all Hofstra players in scoring, while McIntosh led the Pride with four goals and added an assist, and Lynskey scored three times and assisted twice for five points. Philbin finished with two goals, while Tolmie, Forte, Altmann, Lutfi, junior Sterlyn Ardrey, and sophomore Ryan Sheridan all scored once each. Graduate student Logan Danenza led the defense with two caused turnovers. After a rough start to the game, senior Brian Herber dominated from the face-off circle, going 19-30. Sophomore Chase Patterson also saw time on face-offs and went 3-5 in the win.

Fairfield was led by Dylan Beckwith, with eight points on five goals and three assists, and Travis Ford, with three goals and an assist for four points. Colin Consoli took the loss while making 13 saves for the Stags.

The Pride will learn whether they will qualify as the fourth team for the CAA Championships, hosted by Hofstra, when Towson and Drexel square off from Johnny Unitas Stadium on Saturday, May 1.
