Hofstra will be back in action Friday when it begins a four-game series versus Delaware at University Field. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
Game 1
Joyce (2-2) scattered five hits over seven innings of work, while allowing two runs and two walks with five hit batsmen. The senior right-hander worked in and out of trouble, with runners on base in six of his seven innings. However, the Tigers only pushed single runs across in the first and fifth innings. Joyce came up with some big strikeouts, ending four of his seven frames with a strikeout.
After falling behind, 1-0, the Pride tied the game in the second on an RBI double from
Santino Rosso. Hofstra took the lead in the fourth on a bases loaded walk before Towson tied the game in the fifth. Hofstra went ahead for good in the sixth as
Kevin Bruggeman tripled off the fence in centerfield and
Austin Gauthier followed with a double down the left field line. Gauthier would add two insurance runs in the eighth as he blasted an opposite field two-run home run.
Gauthier finished game one 3-3 with two walks and three RBIs. Bruggeman was 2-4 with a double and a triple and two runs scored.
Aljo Sujak struck out the side in the eighth before
John Mikolaicyk came on to get the save in the ninth, his third of the season.
Noah Cabrera was 3-5 with an RBI for the Tigers. Nolan Bolt (0-2) took the loss in relief, allowing three runs on four hits in two innings.
Game 2
Towson would score single runs in the first, fourth, and eighth innings while Hofstra used a solo home run from
Brian Goulard for its only run through seven innings. Trailing 3-1 in the bottom of the eighth,
Anthony D'Onofrio delivered a two-run single that plated Rosso and Weissheier to tie the score. Following a scoreless ninth inning, the game went to extra innings with the international tiebreaker rule employed.
Towson took advantage of a pair of Hofstra errors in the 10th inning to score three runs. In the Hofstra half of the inning, with a runner on second and one out, Weissheier hit a towering two-run home run to cut the Pride's deficit to one, 6-5. Two batters later, Goulard hit a two-out double and then came in to score the tying run on
Nick Marrero's double off the left field fence.
The Tigers went ahead 7-6 with a run in the top of the 11th as Billy Godrick had an RBI single. But Hofstra would not go quietly as Gauthier's two-out single up the middle tied the game. After Rosso walked to put runners on first and second, Weissheier took a 3-2 pitch to the gap in right center for the game-winning hit as Gauthier came in with the run to give the Pride the 8-7 victory and complete the sweep.
Brad Camarda (2-1) pitched the final two innings and picked up the win. Starter
Ryan Rue was solid in a no-decision, allowing three hits and two runs (one earned) over five innings. He also struck out five.
In addition to his career-high six hits, which included three doubles and the home run, Weissheier drove in three runs and scored two others. Rosso had a three-hit game while Goulard had two hits in the game.
Cabrera and Javon Fields each had a pair of hits for the Tigers. Kody Reeser (3-4) was tagged with the loss after allowing two runs on two hits in 2/3 of an inning.
