Philadelphia, PA - For the third time in as many CAA Championships, 110 minutes was not enough time to determine a victor between Hofstra and No. 18 James Madison. After a scoreless game, the Dukes claimed the Colonial Athletic Association Championship on penalty kicks (4-3). James Madison earns the automatic bid to the NCAA Championship and will learn its postseason matchup when bids are announced Monday afternoon. Hofstra finishes the season with a 5-2-3 record.
Each team had opportunities during regulation and overtime but both keepers were up to the task. Hofstra freshman
Wessel Speel stopped a season-high eight shots for the Pride to keep the game scoreless. His JMU counterpart, TJ Bush, only made two saves but was also adept at cutting off Hofstra crosses from outside the box.
Hofstra's best chance came in the 33rd minute when
Stefan Mason sent in a long ball to the far post that
Matthew Vowinkel got a head on. But Bush was right there and made the save. Hofstra also had a good shot in the overtime as
Ryan Carmichael's blast from outside the box was tipped over the crossbar by Bush.
James Madison started the penalty kick round and got a score from Alex Krakowiak.
Jack Nuttall answered for the Pride. Rodrigo Robles made it 2-1 and Hofstra's
Hendrik Hebbeker missed his attempt wide right. Tyler Clegg made it 3-1 for the Dukes, though Mason converted his shot for the Pride to make it 3-2. Luca Erhardt hit for James Madison and
Storm Strongin followed for Hofstra to make it 4-3 going to the fifth round. Speel came up huge as he stopped Steve Foss to give the Pride a shot to tie and force additional rounds. Carmichael put his kick high and it unluckily hit the underside of the crossbar and bounced straight down and away to give the Dukes the title.
