Brookline, MA - Senior
Storm Strongin's overtime goal off a corner kick lifted the Hofstra men's soccer team to a 4-3 win over Northeastern Saturday afternoon at Parsons Field. The victory clinched the Colonial Athletic Association North Division for the Pride and sends the team into the CAA Championship Semifinals next week.
The Pride closes out the regular season with an overall record of 4-2-2 and a 2-0-2 mark in CAA play. For the Huskies, they end their season at 0-5-1 overall and 0-3-1 in the conference.
With the score tied at 3-3 7:45 into the first overtime period, Strongin set up for a corner kick, the 12th of the game for the Pride. The senior lined up and sent a curling ball into the Northeastern penalty area. The ball continued to curl towards the far post and over the outstretched arm of Northeastern goalkeeper Owen Kempton and in for the winner.
Hofstra took the lead just two minutes into the game thanks to a shot from the outside foot of freshman
Ryan Carmichael. The Huskies tied up it shortly after the opening goal as Eren Senyuva picked up a goal and took the lead minutes later on Ryan Massoud's tally. However, the Pride leveled the score with a close-range goal by junior
Hendrik Hebbeker. Hebbeker attacked the goal from the far sideline and beat two Northeastern defenders before unleashing a shot low and to the post that beat the diving Kempton.
Northeastern took a 3-2 lead right before the halftime whistle on a headed ball off the crossbar by Stach Jaran from an outside-the-box cross from Benjamin Klingen.
With 18:04 left in regulation and the Pride trailing by one, sophomore
Jason Ramirez lined up for a corner kick. Ramirez floated his kick towards the near post, and senior
Matthew Vowinkel beat his markers and headed the ball into the back of the net for the late equalizer.
Hebbeker finished the day with a goal and an assist, while Ramirez and senior
Jack Nuttall recorded assists against the Huskies. Freshman
Wessel Speel made one save in the contest.
The Pride will now prepare for the CAA Semifinals on April 15 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The Pride will take on South No. 2 UNCW in the semifinals. Game time has yet to be announced.
