Bianca Bucciarelli had a season-best 14 kills and senior
Ana Martinovic added 12 kills but the Hofstra volleyball team fell in four sets to Northeastern on Sunday evening at the Cabot Center.
The loss drops Hofstra's record to 3-2 overall and 0-2 in Colonial Athletic Association action this season, while Northeastern improved to 5-1 and 2-0 in league play. Set scores were 25-16, 22-25, 25-15, and 25-22 in favor of the Huskies.
Hofstra dug itself an early hole in the match as the Huskies took the first set by nine points as they hit .391 in the opening stanza. The Pride would rally back to knot the match at one set each with a three-point triumph in the second set. The Pride's defense was much better in that set, holding Northeastern to a .250 attack percentage to aid in the set victory.
The third set went the way of Northeastern again as they returned to their strong offensive showing in pushing the lead to two sets to one. A tight fourth set wasn't decided until late as the Pride held a 21-20 lead following a block. The lead was short-lived, though, as Northeastern scored three straight points to lead 23-21. After a Hofstra timeout, Bucciarelli added another kill to bring the Pride within one, but the home team scored the final two points of the set to earn the win.
Senior
Juliana Vaz had 21 digs for Hofstra, which also got a career-high 12 digs from sophomore
Sarianna Anglero. Junior
Maddie Appleton dished out 25 assists and added seven digs in the contest.
Erica Staunton posted 17 kills and six digs for Northeastern, which also got 26 assists and six digs from Samantha Shupe.
Hofstra returns to action on Friday, March 12, when it hosts Towson at 4 p.m.

- Hofstra is now 45-15 all-time against Northeastern.
- Bucciarelli's previous season-high of 13 kills came against Seton Hall.
