Plymouth Meeting, PA -
Jack Jett struck out a career-high 10 batters in six innings of work, allowing just five hits and one earned run in game one and
Jimmy Joyce threw a complete game in game two but Villanova came out on top in both games Sunday afternoon at Villanova Ballpark at Plymouth. The Wildcats posted a 5-0 victory in the opener and a 3-1 victory in the nightcap.
Hofstra slips to 4-4 on the season with the losses while Villanova evens its record at 2-2.
Game 1
Jett (0-1) was in command until the Wildcats caught a few breaks in the fourth to take a 1-0 lead. Ryan Toohers hit a one-out pop up in the infield that fell in untouched for a double. After a groundout to third for the second out, Nick Oar lofted a pop up just behind short that also fell in, allowing Toohers to score.
The score remained that way until the eighth when Villanova scored four times against
Aljo Sujak. Chris Rotondo had an RBI double in the inning and Jack O'Reilly added an RBI single. The Wildcats also scored on a throwing error and a Nick Lorusso infield single.
Gordon Graceffo (1-0) allowed just five hits and struck out seven batters in a complete game victory.
Austin Gauthier had a single and a double for the Pride, while
Anthony D'Onofrio,
Ryan Morash, and
Alex Sica added singles.
Game 2
Villanova pushed across two runs in the fifth inning as the Wildcats loaded the bases and pinch-hitter Anthony Schooley lifted a sacrifice fly to drive in the first run. Sam Margulis followed with a squeeze bunt that made it 2-0.
The Pride answered in the sixth as
Nick Marrero led off with a double and went to third on
Aidan Larkin's single. Marrero would come in to score and Larkin moved to second on a wild pitch, but that was the only run the Pride would get on the day. Hofstra did threaten in the ninth, putting the tying runs in scoring position without scoring as the Wildcats put out a runner at home on a fielder's choice and closer Danny Wilkinson stranded the tying runs at second and third with a strikeout for the save.
Joyce (0-1), who notched his second career complete game, allowed three runs on five hits with five strikeouts in his eight innings of work. Jimmy Kingsbury (1-1) went six innings for Villanova and allowed one run on three hits with 11 strikeouts. Cameron Mathes followed with 2 2/3 scoreless before yielding to Wilkinson.
Rob Weissheier had two hits in game two for the Pride. Gauthier,
Steve Harrington, Marrero and Larkin added hits as well. Â
Hofstra returns to action Saturday, March 13 when it hosts Sacred Heart in a doubleheader in the Pride's home opener. First pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m.
