SB: Hofstra Drops Wet Wednesday Bout to Seton Hall

SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – The Hofstra University softball team took on Seton Hall in a wet non-conference matchup on Wednesday at Essex County Mike Sheppard, Sr. Field, but fell to the Pirates by a score of 6-2.

Sophomore Chelsea Manto and Jaycee Ruberti each went 2-for-3 on the day with one walk, while Manto scored one of Hofstra's two runs. Graduate student Kristin Hallam had one hit, an RBI double in the fifth, while graduate student Alexis Goeke drove in the other Hofstra run in the fourth.

The first two innings went scoreless for both teams with only one runner reaching base for both squads, but Seton Hall eventually scored first with a two-out, two-run home run in the bottom of the third. Hofstra cut the deficit in half in their next at-bats when Goeke scored Manto on an RBI groundout.

The rain picked up in the bottom of the fourth and Seton Hall took full advantage as the Pirates plated four runs on five hits to take a 6-2 lead over Hofstra. The Pride scraped up one more run in the top of the fifth when Hallam knocked an opposite-field double to plate Losco who reached base on an error to lead off the inning.

The Pride rallied in the top of the sixth when Losco tripled down the right field line with two outs before Giordano and graduate student Alexa Corben drew back-to-back walks to load the bases, but a Hofstra strikeout stranded all three runners to end the late rally.

Junior Madison Burns suffered the loss, surrendering five runs through 3.0 innings of work with two strikeouts. Annabella Pisapia pitched 1.1 innings in relief while Nikki Mullen tossed 1.2 innings to close out the game.

Hofstra returns to the diamond this weekend for a three-game Colonial Athletic Association series at Towson. The schedule has changed slightly due to weather, and Hofstra will now face the Tigers for a single-game on Friday at 1 p.m. before turning around for a Saturday doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m.

NOTES:
-Hofstra is now 14-12 against Seton Hall in the all-time series
-Meghan Giordano reached base all three plate appearances with two walks and a hit by pitch
-Seton Hall recorded 11 hits to Hofstra's six.
