Villanova, Pa. – The Hofstra softball team scored six runs, but it wasn't enough as the Villanova Wildcats came from behind and defeated the Pride, 8-6 to close out a single-game at the Villanova Softball Complex on Sunday.
Two Hofstra players finished with a pair of RBI on the day as graduate student
Alexis Goeke went 1-for-3 at the plate while junior
Meghan Giordano went 1-for-3 with a double. Junior
Jaycee Ruberti recorded one hit on the day, a solo home run in the top of the seventh, while graduate student
Kristin Hallam and junior
Kasey Collins also recorded one hit. Junior
Angelina Ioppolo had the only multi-hit game for Hofstra as she went 2-for-3 on the day.
Hofstra raced out to a 2-0 lead over Villanova in the first inning when Hallam led off with a single. Both Hallam and freshman
Kayla Wilson scored on a Giordano double through the left side. Hofstra extended that lead to five runs in the third inning when Goeke ripped a two-RBI single to right field to score Giordano and sophomore
Chelsea Manto who both reached base on an error.
Villanova scored the next eight runs of the game including three in the fourth and five in the sixth to take a three-run lead, 8-5. Ruberti smacked a her first career home run to right-center in the seventh, but the Pride were retired in order the rest of the way.
Junior
Madison Burns pitched a complete game and took the loss inside the circle while Anissa Amarillas earned her first win of the season. Hofstra drops to 1-4 on the season while Villanova improves to 6-7.
Hofstra returns to action next in the state of New York for a single-game against St. John's on March 17. First pitch against the Red Storm is at 3 p.m. at Red Storm Field.
