QUEENS, N.Y. - The Hofstra University softball team scored five runs during its final two at-bats to come from behind and defeat St. John's University, 11-10 in non-conference play on Wednesday, March 17.
The Pride collected 14 hits as a team, led by an outstanding 4-for-5 effort from Jaycee Ruberti. Ruberti tallied four singles, scoring two runs and driving in four while also stealing two bases. Angelina Ioppolo also had a huge day at the plate, finishing 4-for-4 with a double and three runs batted in. In the circle, Annabella Pisapia earned her first collegiate victory, tossing two innings in relief and allowing just one run. Madison Burns returned to the circle to close out the contest after making the start and earned her first save of the season.
The Pride jumped on the Red Storm early, scoring three runs during the top of the first inning. Ruberti opened the scoring with an RBI-single to right field and later scored on an RBI-single from Ioppolo. The Pride continued to roll early, as Ruberti drove in another run with a single to center field during the second inning and Hofstra tacked on two more runs during the third to take a 6-0 lead.
St. John's did not go down easily, however, scoring two runs during the third and seven runs during the fourth to storm back and take a 9-6 advantage just past the midway point of the contest. Hofstra started its rally during the top of the sixth, when Kayla Wilson doubled to left-center field to score Kristin Hallam, and Ioppolo drove home to more runs to level the score later in the frame.
The Hofstra defense came up big during the bottom of the sixth inning to halt a potential Red Storm rally, as Hallam snagged a line drive up the middle, stepped on second and fired a throw to first base to turn a triple play and keep St. John's off the scoreboard. Ruberti delivered one more clutch hit during the Pride's final at-bat, driving in two runs with a two-out single to give Hofstra a 11-9 lead. Despite a threat by St. John's during the bottom half of the stanza, Burns struck out the final batter to strand the bases loaded and hang on for the one-run win.
Hofstra returns to action on Saturday, March 20 for a non-conference doubleheader against UMass Lowell at Bill Edwards Stadium beginning at 12:00 p.m.
