Ana Martinovic had a match-high 11 kills and junior
Maddie Appleton tallied 27 assists and 10 digs to lead the Hofstra volleyball to a dominating three-set sweep of Stony Brook in The Long Island Rivalry on Sunday afternoon at the David S. Mack Physical Education Center.
The win was Hofstra's second straight to start the season, while Stony Brook falls to 0-3 in 2021. It marks the Pride's first 2-0 start since beginning the 2016 campaign with four straight wins. Set scores were 25-16, 25-20, and 25-11.
The Hofstra offense was clicking on all cylinders in the contest as the Pride hit at a .351 clip, including hitting over .400 in both the first and third set. A trio of players, sophomores
Athina Dimitriadis (8-0-19) and
Madeline Matheny (3-0-6) and freshman
Bianca Bucciarelli (6-0-12) had no errors in the match to pace the Pride offense.
Hofstra earned a nine-point win in the first set, holding the Seawolves to a .000 attack percentage to take the early lead in the contest. Although the Pride never trailed in the second set, it was the closest of the match with Hofstra capturing a five-point win. The final set was the Pride's most dominant as they easily dispatched of Stony Brook, 25-11, to capture the match and earn their second straight win to start the season.
Matheny led Hofstra with 11 digs in the match, while senior
Juliana Vaz had nine digs and six assists.
Nia Wattley had eight kills for Stony Brook, while Julia Kim tallied 25 assists and five digs.
Hofstra is back in action on Friday when it travels to Seton Hall for a 4 p.m. match.
NOTES
- Hofstra is now 10-1 all-time against Stony Brook. The Pride have won eight straight matches against the Seawolves.
- The double-double by Appleton was the first of her career.
- The 11 digs by Matheny marked a new career-high. Her previous career-high of eight came in Saturday's season opener against NJIT.
