VB: Hofstra Battles in Loss to James Madison

Hempstead, NY - Junior Athina Dimitriadis tied a season-high with 13 kills for the Hofstra volleyball team in a three-set defeat to James Madison on Saturday afternoon inside the David S. Mack Physical Education Center.

The set scores from today's contest were 27-25, 25-21, and 25-22.

Hofstra's record drops to 13-13 overall and 7-8 in Colonial Athletic Association action. The Dukes moved to 17-6 and 11-4 in the CAA with today's win.

The two teams traded the lead seven times in the opening set, and the score was tied at 13 points during the set. The Pride led late in the set and had set-point twice, but the Dukes rallied back both times and eventually took the opening set. Six of Dimitriadis' 13 kills came in the opening set.

The Pride hit a strong .344 in the second set, but James Madison posted a .481 hitting percentage and recorded only one attacking error against the hosts. The Pride hung tough with the Dukes and pulled to within one at multiple points in the set, yet couldn't even the score as James Madison scored four of the final five points down the stretch to win the set.

Trailing midway through the third set, Hofstra pulled ahead thanks to four consecutive points. The Pride held a 21-18 advantage late in the set, but James Madison retook the lead with four straight points, and they scored the final three points to take the set and the match.

Freshman Florencia Wolkowyski posted 11 kills against the Dukes, the 10th time this season she has finished with double-digit kill figures. Freshman Beatriz Alves dished out 39 assists in today's match.

Miëtte Veldman paced the Dukes with 14 kills on 30 attempts and three service aces. Sophia Davis finished the match with 10 kills for James Madison.

The Pride returns to the court on Sunday in the conclusion of its series with James Madison on Senior Day. The match will air live on FloVolleyball at 1 p.m.

NOTES:
-Hofstra is 26-19 all-time against James Madison.
-Dimitriadis tied her season-high of 13 kills originally set against St. Francis Brooklyn on August 31.
-Ana Martinovic, Chiara Cucco and Sheryl Mathew all posted eight digs for the Pride.
