MSOC: Title Game Bound; Hofstra Defeats Drexel In CAA Semifinals

Hempstead, NY – Behind a pair of goals from forward Matthew Vowinkel, the top-seeded Hofstra Pride men's soccer team advanced to the Colonial Athletic Association championship game with a 2-1 semifinal win over fourth-seeded Drexel Thursday evening at Hofstra Soccer Stadium. The victory sent 13th-ranked Hofstra to the championship game for the ninth time overall, third time in four seasons, and second consecutive season.

Hofstra (15-1-2) also tied the school record for victories in the game, matching the 1968 squad that went 15-2-1 and reached the NCAA Tournament for the first time in program history.

Hofstra got on the board first, in the 12th minute, after Ryan Carmichael battled several Drexel (8-8-1) defenders for a ball in the box and sent a pass to Vowinkel, who right-foot tapped it into the left side of the goal for his eighth goal of the season.

The lead was short-lived as Drexel evened the game six minutes later when Kyle Tucker passed a ball back to Daniel Nesseler, who sent his shot past Hofstra goalkeeper Wessel Speel to even the score at 1-1.

Hofstra came out in the second half and moved back in front in the 50th minute as Ryan Carmichael dribbled down the right sideline and passed the ball back to Stefan Mason, who drove a ball into the box that Vowinkel got a head on and sent past Drexel keeper Cameron Sanders for the 2-1 lead.

Speel made five saves for Hofstra, while Sanders picked up two saves for the Dragons.

Hofstra will face third-seeded Elon in the CAA championship game Sunday at 1 p.m. at Hofstra Soccer Stadium. The Phoenix defeated second-seeded Northeastern, 1-0, in the second semifinal of the night on penalty kick goal from Scott Vatne in the 75th minute.

Notes:
-Hofstra is 22-28-11 all-time against Drexel and is 8-0-2 in the last 10 meetings.
-Hofstra outshot the Dragons, 15-14, and held a 5-1 advantage in corner kicks.
-Vowinkel moved past Hofstra Athletics Hall of Famer Ed Gaffney into fourth-place on the Pride's career goals list with 38.
-Speel's five saves were his most in a game since he saved seven shots in the first meeting against Drexel on Sept. 18.
