VB: Hofstra Cruises To 10th Win Of The Season

Hempstead, NY - Freshman Florencia Wolkowyski shined with 13 kills, seven blocks, and four digs, while graduate student Ana Martinovic tied her with 13 kills and added six digs to lead the Hofstra volleyball team to a three-set sweep of William & Mary in Colonial Athletic Association volleyball action on Saturday afternoon at the David S. Mack Physical Education Center.

The win was Hofstra's 10th of the season and improved the Pride's record to 10-8 and 4-3 in conference action. William & Mary fell to 3-7 and 0-5 in the league. Set scores were 25-22, 25-22, and 25-21 in favor of Hofstra.

Hofstra's defense played a huge role in the victory as the Pride had 14 blocks to the Tribe's two and junior Sarah Pierre led the way as she posted 11 blocks in the victory.

It was all Hofstra to start the match as the Pride jumped out to a 6-1 lead in the first set with Hofstra notching three service aces during that run including a pair from freshmen Beatriz Alves. Hofstra controlled the set the remainder of the way and a kill from junior Zyare Abdul-Rahim ended the first stanza.

Similar to the first stanza, Hofstra opened up set two by scoring four of the first five points, including a kill and a block from both Abdul-Rahim and Pierre. William & Mary rallied, though, and used a 16-8 run to open up a 17-12 advantage later in the set. It would be all Hofstra from that point, though, as the Pride outscored the Tribe, 13-5, down the stretch to push the lead to two sets to none in the match.

The final set was close throughout with Wolkowyski keying a 4-0 Hofstra run with two kills that turned a 17-15 deficit into a 19-17 lead. The set would be knotted at 19 before Hofstra took control with three straight points, including two blocks from Wolkowyski and Pierre, to put the team on the brink of victory. Fittingly, it would be Wolkowyski who ended the match with one of her 13 kills and gave the Pride a sweep of its conference rival.

Junior Athina Dimitriadis posted seven kills, three block solos, and three digs in the contest, while Alves had 39 assists, seven digs, and four blocks.

Maddie Meyers led William & Mary with 11 kills and added seven digs, while Amy Schwem posted 34 assists and 11 digs for the Tribe.

Hofstra and William & Mary will face each other again on Sunday at 1 p.m. The match will air on FloVolleyball.
