WBB: Late Run Propels Hofstra Past William & Mary

Williamsburg, Va. – The Hofstra women's basketball team (3-5, 1-1 CAA) picked up its first Colonial Athletic Association victory of the season on Sunday afternoon as the Pride downed William & Mary (4-3, 1-1 CAA), 75-68 at Kaplan Arena. Hofstra out-scored the Tribe, 22-14 during the final 10 minutes and closed the game on a 12-0 run.

Redshirt junior Jaylen Hines had her best scoring performance of the season, as she dropped a season-high 27 points (10-of-15 FG), just three away from her career-high. In addition, Hines led Hofstra with nine rebounds and three steals. Junior JaKayla Brown recorded her seventh-straight game in double figures with 15 points, two away from matching her career-high while shooting at a 45 percent clip (5-of-11) from the field. Junior Jahsyni Knight was Hofstra's third-leading scorer with 12 points, five boards and a team-best four assists.

Hofstra also got solid contributions from junior Rosi Nicholson who recorded seven points and a career-high seven rebounds and redshirt junior Jaala Henry who tacked on nine points and four caroms.

The Pride finished the game shooting a season-best 47 percent from the floor (26-of-55), but the Blue and Gold shined in the second half, outscoring William & Mary 41-31 during the final 20 minutes while shooting 54.2 percent from the field (13-of-24) and 15-of-21 from the free throw line.

William & Mary got off to a 24-17 after the first quarter where Hines got her day started early with six points during the first 10 minutes. The Tribe reached a nine-point lead on two occasions during the second period, but a 6-0 run that included three-pointer by Brown and an old-fashioned three-point play by Hines closed the gap to three points at halftime with the score in favor of William & Mary, 37-34.

Hofstra trailed by six, 44-38 with 7:55 to go in the third, but another spurt by the Pride tied things up as Knight scored two points and Hines added four to knot the score at 44. The Tribe responded with four more points before Hofstra got back within one on three more occasions, concluding the third period down by one, 54-53.

The first five minutes of the fourth quarter were back-and-forth with two lead changes, but after William & Mary hit a layup at 3:09 to extend the score to 68-63, Hofstra put its foot on the gas and began its final run with the help of an 8-of-10 effort from the stripe. Even more impressive, Hofstra did not commit a foul during the final seven minutes of action despite having several players in foul trouble. Henry gave the Pride a 69-68 advantage with 1:46 to go, and Nicholson knocked down a jump shot to give Hofstra a three-point lead, 71-68. From there, Hofstra added four more free throws to claim the conference victory.

Hofstra is set to return to action on Thursday for its lone home-and-home conference series of the season. The Pride will meet Northeastern first on January 7 at 12 p.m. at the Cabot Center in Boston before returning home to meet the Huskies on January 9 at 2 p.m. Both events are closed to the public and no tickets will be sold.
