Welcome to the Hofstra Family Spotlight. Our goal is to showcase our Hofstra family members, including our loyal corporate partners and season ticket holders, to let the Hofstra community learn more about them and how they support the Pride athletics program.
Born in Freeport, Curt Cretty is a 1973 graduate of Hofstra and he earned his BA in elementary education and psychology. He went on to open Country Kitchen in Massapequa, and is now retired and enjoys spending time with his family.
Curt played basketball growing up and after reading a magazine article about Hofstra and Rich Laurel, he began supporting the Flying Dutchmen right away.
Curt has been able to witness many of the great Hofstra student-athletes in person and enjoyed cheering on all-time Hofstra greats Laurel and John Irving. He was able to cheer on Hofstra in person during back-to-back East Coast Conference championships and NCAA Tournament appearances in 1976 and 1977, and has been there with the team every step of the way since.
His favorite memory from attending a Hofstra game was Justin Wright-Foreman's 34-foot three-pointer at the buzzer that capped off a 14-2 run to propel Hofstra to a 75-72 victory over Northeastern on January 5, 2019, at the David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex. The basket gave Wright-Foreman a then-career-high 42 points, which was a Mack Sports Complex record at the time. "It was just an impossible shot to hit," he said.
With all of the great players Curt has seen, his favorite is Wright-Foreman. "I believe Justin was one of the greatest players ever to put on a uniform," he said. "He was very exciting to watch and a very humble kid."
Curt continues to support the Pride with his family, attending games with his wife, brother-in-law, son, and nephews. Each season has become very important to him, saying "I feel that it has filled a void and is an important part of my life. I really look forward to the beginning of every new season." One reason he looks forward to each season is because of how close he has become with many of his fellow fans, saying his favorite thing about being a season ticket holder is "the passion and camaraderie of the fans and Hofstra alumni."
Hofstra Athletics is proud to have Curt Cretty as part of our family. The success of our student-athletes, and the University in general, are not possible without the incredible support of our entire family.
