Albuquerque, New Mexico - Hofstra scored three times in the top of the ninth to take an 11-10 lead but New Mexico scored twice in the bottom of the inning for a 12-11 victory in a wild back-and-forth game at Santa Ana Star Field Friday night.
Hofstra slipped to 3-8 on the season and saw a modest two-game win streak come to an end. The Lobos moved to 10-4 on the year.
New Mexico took a 1-0 lead in the second before the Pride rallied for four runs in the third. With runners on first and third,
Anthony D'Onofrio drove in a run with a sacrifice bunt.
Rob Weissheier had a run-scoring single that gave the Pride a 2-1 lead. A wild pitch scored a third run and
Vinnie Costello capped the scoring with an RBI single. After the Lobos rallied for a pair of runs in the bottom half, the Pride responded with a two-run fourth to take a 6-3 lead.
Austin Gauthier singled to lead off the inning and two infield outs moved him to third. Weissheier delivered a triple for the first run and
Sean Flaherty followed with a double to make it a three-run lead.
The Lobos would score four in the fourth to take a 7-6 lead. However, the lead only lasted until the sixth when Hofstra plated two runs to grab an 8-7 advantage behind RBI singles from D'Onofrio and Flaherty. That was short-lived as the Lobos loaded the bases in the bottom of the inning and went ahead on a two-run single by Kyler Castillo. The Lobos added an insurance run in the seventh on a leadoff home run from Ediberto Reyes.
Hofstra would not go quietly in the ninth, loading the bases with one out. D'Onofrio drove in a run on a fielder's choice to make it a one-run game. Then, with runners on the corners, Weissheier lifted a high pop up to left center that was dropped for a three-base error and allowed the go-ahead runs to score.
After
Lucas Hall retired the first batter of the bottom of the ninth,
Brad Camarda came on to close it out but he hit his first batter and then gave up back-to-back doubles with the last one by Kyle Landers driving in the tying and winning runs.
Camarda (0-1) took the loss for Hofstra. Payton Strambler (2-1), who gave up the lead in the top of the ninth was the winning pitcher for the Lobos.
Santino Rosso led five Hofstra players with multiple hits, going 3-5 with a double and a run scored. Gauthier, Weissheier, Flaherty, and Sica each had two hits. Gauthier scored four runs as he was on base four times. D'Onofrio finished with three RBIs, while Weissheier and Flaherty had two each.

The series continues Saturday with a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m. (EST).
